What to wear to that special event, cocktail party or matric dance sends many women into a spin – but it needn’t be so.

It’s a matter of finding the dress that suits you and one that is right for the occasion, says Ballito image and style consultant, Amanda Ferri.

Amanda, who has been marketing, consulting and styling for 10 years, says there’s a dress for everyone. She gives these shopping pointers:

H Body shape: Ask yourself what you can show off and what you need to conceal. If you have a heavy bust, you’ll need to wear a bra, so take that into account when shopping. If you are small-busted, choose a boob tube or spaghetti straps. Weight on your tummy? Go for ruches or gathers over that area, rather than a voluminous loose style. An A-line will conceal heavy hips and legs. A sheath dress will balance out broad shoulders.

H Colours: Many women have black as their default setting, but there’s a resurgence of bright colours in evening wear. Some see black as slimming, but style can do more to trim the figure than colour. A beautiful dress in a stunning hue will draw attention away from figure faults. Monochrome is more slimming than a pattern.

H Accessories. Most dresses call for beautiful earrings and bracelets, but don’t over-accessorise if there is a lot of beading or detail in the dress – let the dress do the talking.

Subtle accessories can also make a strong statement. Skyscraper heels may look good, but if you are going to be on your feet a lot, don’t forget comfort.

A small clutch bag will complete the look and it does not have to match your dress – a silver bag works with almost everything.

H Hair and make-up. Your hairstyle should suit the formality of the gown. Go for elegance and simplicity rather than an elaborate style. Too much make-up will detract from your elegant look. It’s all about enhancing your features for the special occasion.

H Cocktail wear. Young women with beautiful legs can wear short flimsy cocktail dresses, but be realistic. If you are older or have heavy legs, there are many designs that will flatter you. Soft-flowing black pants, teamed with an embellished top, will be sensational.

H Wraps. You’ll need a wrap for chilly evenings and many dresses come with wraps, but if you need to buy one, make sure you choose a lightweight fabric – anything heavy will conflict with a party dress.

H Matrics. Your dress must complement your personality. Many girls have a fixed idea of the dress they want and it is not always suitable for their body shape or personality. Choose something that fits well, flatters you and that you will feel confident in. - Daily News
