Celebrated Durban jewellery designer Kirsten Goss’s silver, gold and amethyst Lily Pad ring has won the award for the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at Cape Town’s Design Indaba.

Durban-based Goss has outlets in South Africa, the UK, US and Asia and the ring was hand-crafted by a team of goldsmiths working from her in-house design studio in Durban.

A delighted Goss said her team was “beaming from ear to ear”.

“We are overjoyed because we are dedicated to the labour-intensive craft of goldsmithing,” she said.

“We don’t make conservative jewellery but we use conservative techniques.”

The ring was made about two or three years ago as part of a group of rings, said Goss.

It is wrought in a contrasting combination of 18-carat gold vermeil and sterling silver, in an organic double layer design and set with a faceted green amethyst.

It is a limited edition design, with only 24 more rings available for purchase at a cost of R6 100 each.

“Its style is definitely from Africa, clean and contemporary with an organic feel,” says Goss.

The ring will be shown in Johannesburg, before being taken to London, New York and Hong Kong.

Nominated by Jacquie Myburgh, editor of VISI magazine, the Lily Pad ring was up against nine other entries, that included ceramics, textiles and even architecture. - Daily News
