Distraught relatives of Mark Robson, 27, of Gillitts, who went missing in Thailand last month, have provisionally identified a body recovered at Phuket which they think is his.

Robson went missing on January 23, which was when he made his last-known ATM transaction. On February 6, he failed to board a flight from Phuket to Taipei, where he was to start a job as an English teacher.

A body matching Robson’s description was subsequently found on Freedom Beach, in Phuket.

The family was then sent images of the body by Thai authorities, from which they provisionally identified Robson.

Robson’s father, Keith, said the family was taking strain and asked the media to respect the family’s decision to keep the matter private.

“We have provisionally identified the body and have been in contact with Thai authorities. Once formal identification has taken place, plans for funeral arrangements will take place,” he said.

Thai authorities were still busy with investigations into the death, local newspaper the Phuket Gazette reported.

The paper also reported that photographs taken from the scene suggested the possibility of foul play, especially bruises on Robson’s back and the fact that he had been found “hanged” in a sitting position.
