Fancy a swim in the warm Indian Ocean?

How about a spicy, aromatic “bunny chow”?

Or maybe you’d enjoy a dolphin show, and a visit to the aquarium?

Whatever you’re in the mood for, Durban can deliver.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, the timeline of human habitation in Durban – with its many European influences and tinge of Indian flavour – went back to long before the advent of recorded history in the region.

“It is now established that prior to the arrival of the Nguni people and subsequent European colonialists, the area was populated by the original people of Southern Africa – now collectively Khoi/San.”

On Christmas Day in 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama passed the mouth of Durban Bay and promptly named it Rio de Natal (Christmas River).

Today, Durban is “South Africa’s Playground”, attracting both local and international visitors, including those in town for the World Economic Forum (or #WEFAfrica2017) this week.

For delegates staying an extra day or two and looking to make the most of their time in the coastal city, The Mercury has compiled a list of exciting, uniquely Durban things to do.
