Bangkok - Police say four protest leaders who led rioting in the streets of Thailand's capital have turned themselves in and will be taken into custody for interrogation.

Thailand's deputy police commissioner Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit told reporters "they have surrendered".

Associated Press reporters on Tuesday saw at least four protest leaders being led from an area outside the prime minister's office, where leaders earlier called off their rally.

They were taken to the nearby Bangkok police headquarters.

Government spokesperson Panitan Wattanayagorn said it was not clear if all protest leaders had turned themselves in.
