Rescue workers searched Wednesday for 15 people missing after a small boat sank in the Strait of Sunda between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, a rescue official said.

The Langsung Jaya, carrying 14 passengers and its captain, capsized on Tuesday after the vessel suffered a leak while en route from the port of Muara Baru in north Jakarta to Panaitan island in the Strait of Sunda, said Agung from the National Search and Rescue Agency.

Agung, who like many Indonesian uses only one name, said several hours of searching on Tuesday failed to find any of the missing people. A helicopter and three boats resumed the search on Wednesday morning, he said.

Deadly sea accidents are common in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelagic nation, partly attributed to the lax enforcement of safety regulations. - Sapa-dpa
