Baghdad - A suicide bomber dressed in police uniform killed four policemen at a checkpoint in north-eastern Iraq, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Hameed al-Shimari, who heads an emergency police unit in Baquba, 65km north-east of Baghdad, said that seven civilians were also wounded in the attack.

A US military official said that at least eight US soldiers were wounded in the attack, but said that none were killed, as Iraqi police had reported.

While violence has declined sharply across most of Iraq, ethnically mixed Diyala province has remained one of most restive areas of the country.

Suicide bombings have occurred frequently in Baquba, which has been seen as one of the few remaining havens in Iraq for Sunni Islamist al-Qaeda fighters. - Reuters
