Kathmandu - At least 35 people were missing after a crowded ferry capsized on Sunday in a river in eastern Nepal, a local official said.

"At least 35 people are missing after the boat turned over in the Koshi river early Sunday," local official Yubaraj Bhattarai said by telephone from Sunsari district, 230 kilometres south-east of Kathmandu.

The official said the boat was carrying around 50 people and that 11 were rescued.

"It is too early to presume all the missing are dead," Bhattarai said, adding that the boat was overloaded. - Sapa-AFP
