Gays ‘make fine parents’

London -

A leading British childrens charity complained on Sunday that too many people think gays make inferior parents.

A survey by Barnardos said nearly a third of the public think heterosexual couples make better parents than same-sex couples.

The charity’s new chief said that prejudice against gays is harming the chances for young people in the care system winning new homes through adoption.

The plea on behalf of gay parents comes after outgoing chief of Barnardos, Martin Narey, said last week that there were plenty of couples queueing up to adopt children but were prevented from doing so by race rules imposed by social workers.

The new chief executive, Anne Marie Carrie, said: “To suggest that a same sex couple are not as able to raise a child as a heterosexual couple is at once absurd and unsubstantiated.

Currie added that discouraging gay adopters is severely diminishing the chances of securing loving, stable homes for the children who are waiting .

Since 2007 it has been illegal under the Sexual Orientation Regulations for a local authority or adoption agency to discriminate against gay parents.

As a result 10 successful Roman Catholic adoption agencies have stopped finding adoptive homes for children or have severed their links with the church. - Daily Mail
