Berlin - The German navy foiled a pirate attack on a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia on Tuesday and arrested nine pirates, the German military in Berlin said.

The frigate Rheinland-Pfalz received an distress call early Tuesday from a German-owned cargo ship saying it was under fire from pirates armed with bazookas and machine guns, the military said in a statement.

The frigate dispatched a helicopter which together with another helicopter from the US naval ship Monterey fired warning shots. The Rheinland-Pfalz then steamed to the area and took the nine into custody. - Sapa-AFP
