The National Weather Service reported temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius in downtown Los Angeles, breaking the previous record of 35 C set for the date in 1958.
San Francisco set a new mark at an unseasonable 34°C.
Readings of 38°C) or more also occurred elsewhere across Southern California counties, including 39,5°C) at Santa Ana and Riverside.
Sunday's 34,5°C high in downtown Los Angeles also broke a 95-year-old record.
