Madrid - Police in Spain's Canary Islands shot and killed three tigers and captured four others after the animals escaped from their enclosure at a zoo, local authorities said.

The seven animals escaped when the enclosure at the Crocodile Park zoo, on the island of Gran Canaria, was being cleaned.

Police shot three of them and captured four others, said a spokeswoman for the local representative of Spain's central government on the Atlantic archipelago.

About 100 police officers were involved in the operation to find the animals, which did not leave the zoo's perimeter.

There was no danger to the public as the zoo was closed at the time, the spokeswoman said. - Sapa-AFP
