Bishkek - A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck a remote area in Kyrgyzstan close to the Chinese border on Sunday but there were no casualties, the US Geological Survey (USGS) and local officials said.

The quake struck at 10.08am (04.08GMT) and its epicentre was 140 kilometres south of the Kyrgyz town of Karakol and 335 kilometres south-east of the capital Bishkek, the USGS said.

The head of the Kyrgyz seismological institute Kanat Abdrakhmatov said that there have been no reports of casualties or damage in the quake.

In October 2008, at least 74 people, 41 of them children, were killed in a 6.6 magnitude quake that hit a remote Kyrgyz village close to the border with China.
