Madrid - The management of a women's prison in Spain has been sacked after a probe was opened into suspicions that employees had sex with inmates in exchange for favours, a spokeswoman for Spain's penitentiary administration said Friday.
The director, sub-director and an administrator at the Alcala Meco penetentiary in Madrid were fired while two prison employees were suspended, the spokeswoman told AFP.
"This decision was taken following the discovery of unacceptable individual behaviour," she said, adding there was no exchange of drugs between inmates and prison staff.
Spanish media reported that prison workers would allow inmates to make telephone calls with mobile phones or obtain alcohol in exchange for sexual favours.
Most of the 614 inmates at the prison are in jail for drug trafficking.
Civil servants' union Csi-Csif criticized a reform passed in 2007 which made it possible to place male officials in women's prisons. - Sapa-AFP
