Sydney - A shark attacked a navy diver in Sydney Harbour on Wednesday, leaving him with severe injuries to his right hand and leg, an ambulance officer said.

The 31-year-old man was swimming near Garden Island Naval Base, inside the harbour, early in the morning when he was attacked. He was undergoing emergency surgery.

"The patient said he saw something big and grey underneath him just before the attack," said an ambulance spokesperson.

"He has severe right hand injuries and severe buttocks down to his knee injuries on one leg," he said.

There have been at least four other shark attacks so far this Australian summer, one of them fatal, sparking a global media frenzy of "Jaws" proportions. Last month, there were three shark attacks in Australian waters in just two days.
