Berlin - Hundreds of German motorists were forced to spend Tuesday night in their cars after heavy snow brought traffic to a halt on a motorway in the south-west of the country, police said on Wednesday.

The Red Cross rallied round with tea and biscuits after 20cm of snow fell in a short space of time on a stretch between Frankfurt and Wuerzburg, making rescue efforts impossible.

Other roads in the area were also gridlocked after trees collapsed from the weight of snow. Police began the slow process of clearing the roads Wednesday morning and praised the motorists for their patience. - AFP
