Regina, Saskatchewan - A 16-year-old youth pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of threatening, confinement and possession of a weapon for bringing a pellet pistol to a Canadian high school and holding 400 people hostage last fall.

The boy, who can't be identified under Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act, admitted in court that he took the pistol to morning prayers in the Luther College gym in Regina, Saskatchewan, on September 23.

The court was told that the expelled student threatened staff and students, then pointed the gun directly at a priest and made him read a statement before the school's principal grabbed the gun from the teen.

Almost all the school's 450 staff and students were in the chapel for daily prayer when the youth walked in and ordered them not to leave.

Defense lawyer Brad Tilling said Tuesday that the boy is very remorseful for his actions.

Prosecution is seeking custody for the youth, while the defense wants him released on conditions that include a curfew and counselling. - Sapa-AP
