A train derailed near the northern Italian town of Bolzano Monday, killing seven people and injuring about 25, firefighters told AFP.

The regional train came off the rails at around 0700 GMT when a landslide hit one of its two cars near the town of Merano, an official with the Bolzano firefighters said.

"Seven people are dead, five seriously injured and about 20 injured more lightly," said the official.

The civil protection agency and several ambulances headed to the scene.

The railway line, inaugurated in 2005, is considered one of the most modern tracks in the country. - Sapa-AFP
