After two years’ development and an investment of more than R600 million, SsangYyong's new Actyon Sports double-cab bakkie is ready for production, and on display at the Geneva motor show.

It's still a tough ladder-frame design but, thanks to its new e-XDi diesel engine - rated for 114kW and 360Nm, the latter available from 1500-2800rpm - the maker claims fuel consumption of 7.4 litres per 100km, a 7.5 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the previous model.

A large, flat rear deck provides a 2.04m2 load area, accessed via a tailgate that takes only half as much effort to open and shut as that of its predecessor.

The cabin is finished in black with metallic trim and an LED-illuminated instrument cluster. Leather upholstery can be specified while rear passengers can recline their seats by up to 29 degrees. Standard kit - for Europe anyway - includes heated seats, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control a sliding sunroof.

A standard-fit electronic stability programme helps keep the shiny side up, and all-wheel drive is an option.

KORANDO FACELIFT

Also making its official debut in Geneva is the revised Korando crossover, with new powertrains and enhanced styling.

A new 110kW, two-litre diesel engine brings CO2 emissions down to 147g/km, while the new two-litre petrol engine is credited with CO2 emissions of 175g/km.

Revised gearing, a new engine casing and an improved transmission control system, help reduce diesel engine noise.

A chromed mesh grille and contemporary-looking hybrid wiper blades distinguish the rejuvenated Korando, while the interior trim gets a new carbon-grain pattern, with a gloss finish on the switchgear and an improved LED-illuminated instrument cluster.
