Audi previews urban car concept

Hot on the heels of a disguised version of Audi's micro car concept being spotted on the streets of Berlin, Audi has released some official propaganda in the form of information and sketches.

Dubbed the Audi urban concept, it's not the kind of car that South African Audi drivers would feel very dignified scooting around the streets of Sandton in, but perhaps this tiny 1+1-seater has a place on the more crowded streets of Europe.

In Audi's own words, the urban concept combines the elements of a racing car, fun car and urban car into one radical new concept. The design brief was to keep weight to an absolute minimum, an example of this approach being the cockpit that's made from CFRP (carbon fibre-reinforced polymer).

The two-seat interior configuration sees two occupants perched low to the ground in a slightly staggered position while the driver can adjust the steering wheel and pedals to his or her own measurements. Also designed to provide a breath of fresh air, the roof can slide rearwards to open.

A design highlight on the outside is the concept's freestanding wheels with surrounding protective plates that sport blinking strips of LED lights.

Power comes from two electric motors, powered by a lithium-ion battery and though Audi has not disclosed any output figures as yet, the vehicle is said to “accelerate powerfully.”
