Two months ago, we brought you news of a turbocharged version of Hyundai's new Veloster coupe-hatch, while speculating that the same engine could find its way into the all-new i30 hatchback.

Now there's a bit more meat to that rumour, with Hyundai's European chief, Allan Rushforth, having told Autocar magazine that that such a move is being discussed within the company.

Rushforth also hinted that the GTI-rival would be based on the three-door version of the new i30, which has yet to be revealed. Judging by how sporty the five-door looks, we can expect this version to be quite a looker indeed.

The obvious power source for this new hot hatch contender would be The Veloster's 1.6-litre direct injection turbopetrol, which pushes a wholesome 152kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm at 1750rpm (Golf GTI is good for 155Nm and 280Nm).

Not quite a GTI-beater in the making then, but something that will run it very close, and presumably at a much lower price.
