Besides the new wheels, the latest Ford Focus sedan and hatch models you see here don't look any different to their predecessors, but there are some new reasons to consider them.

Not only has Ford added some smart new Sync technology to the range, but that line-up has also expanded from eight to twelve models.

IT CAN RECOGNISE A SMILEY FACE

The Sync system is available on Trend and Sport models and it pairs with compatible smart phones and media players via Bluetooth or USB.

But what makes Sync special is that it has a voice command function that's said to be capable of coping with variations in accents and vocabulary and the system is also capable of retrieving text messages and reading them out to you. It even knows what to do when your loved one sends you a smiley face emoticon or uses an abbreviation like LOL.

MORE CHOICE

Four new models join the range. In the case of the four-door, Ford has added a 1.6 Ambiente Powershift automatic option and has also brought the entry price of the 2-litre direct injection GDI engine down with a new Trend model.

The five-door hatch range, meanwhile, has been expanded with two 2.0 TDCi Trend models offering a choice between six-speed manual and six-speed Powershift transmission.

WHAT YOU GET

Ambiente is the bottom model, but it does come with air conditioning, electric front windows, hill-holder, dual airbags and ABS brakes. 2013 cars also feature colour coded door handles and exterior mirrors.

The Trend model brings rear power windows, Sync and curtain airbags to the equation, among other additions, while the Trend Option Pack adds automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 17-inch alloys and full leather interior.

Top of the pile is the Sport model with partial leather seats, Power Start button for keyless starting and dual zone climate control. The Sport has also been enhanced with a styling kit that includes side skirts, bumper extensions and an ST-inspired spoiler.

THREE ENGINES

Depending on which specification level you choose, engine options include a 92kW/159Nm 1.6 petrol, 125kW/200Nm 2-litre direct injection petrol and 120kW/340Nm 2-litre turbodiesel.

Warranty coverage is for four years or 120 000km and a five-year/90 000km service plan is standard.
