CLS Shooting Brake gets AMG treatment

Given Stuttgart's compulsion for filling every conceivable niche with a new model - or, as in this case, a combination of two existing models - it should come as no surprise that, within a day of the the announcement of the CLS Shooting Brake, the German Mercedes-Benz website is carrying one picture, specifications and a video of the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake.

It combines the undeniably sexy lines of the Shooting Brake with the upmarket detail work, aero kit and mad-dog engine of the CLS 63 AMG four-door, to produce a remarkably sophisticated sledgehammer with a drag coefficient of only 0.31 and a kerb weight of 1955kg.

Under the bonnet, of course, is nestled Affalterbach's fabled 5461cc twin-turbo V8, sending 410kW and 800Nm to the rear wheels via the Speedshift MCT seven-speed sport transmission that is fast becoming an AMG trademark.

Mercedes-Benz quotes fuel consumption of 10.1 litres per 100km and emissions of 235g/km - but only a German test driver could be that self-disciplined.
