The suspended Drager breathalyser might be back in use by November, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Star reported that use of the breathalyser was suspended in September last year when the Western Cape High Court found it did not meet the necessary requirements.

Judge Nathan Erasmus ruled that results obtained using the Drager Alcotest 7110 Mark III could not be used as evidence because it had not been properly calibrated and the user manual had not been properly followed.

He said the device could and should be modified to meet the court standard.

The device, which measures the amount of alcohol on a person's breath, had been in use in Athlone to test motorists for drunk driving.

Western Cape transport and public works MEC Robin Carlisle told The Star the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had indicated that it hoped the breathalyser would be ready for use by November.

Carlisle said the court had specified a number of requirements necessary before it could be used again, including technical adjustments and training.

He said a committee chaired by the NPA, and including departmental and SA Bureau of Standard representatives was set up to deal with the matter. -Sapa
