London - Breaking into cars requires deftness and cunning.

But this thief simply whipped out a 12cm knife and cut a man-sized hole in the soft top of this classic Porsche.

Ignoring passers-by – who also seemed to ignore him – he then wriggles down into the driver’s seat and starts to play with the steering wheel of the 911 Carrera as the car alarm sounds.

But CCTV footage reveals he goes nowhere – because the man, thought to be in his 20s, clearly doesn’t know how to get the engine started. He then lifts himself back through the hole and bounces off the spoiler, before swaggering off down the street in Mayfair.

Police said the 1.8m bearded man then targeted another Porsche in the area only 20 minutes later, leaving the lock damaged and the paintwork scratched.

Having failed to break in again, he is then thought to have used his knife in a robbery at JD Sports on Oxford Street.

Police released footage of the incidents, on September 29, in an effort to track down the suspect.
