Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on law enforcement agencies to put an end to illegal drag racing.

This in reaction to the deaths of three people in a horrific high-speed crash in Pretoria on Sunday night, believed to have been caused by illegal racing.

"Law enforcement officers are expected to know where these illegal drag races are taking place, and must stop it even before it starts. If we have to confiscate vehicles, we must do it. If it means that the driving licences of those participating in these illegal races must be suspended and/or cancelled, it must be done.

"We are calling upon law enforcement agencies to do everything possible to put an end to illegal drag racing, especially in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal."

That's not to say that petrolheads wanting to race their rides will be left out in the cold, Ndebele even stating that the department will assist in arranging legal races.

But he reiterated: "illegal drag racing will not be tolerated and those who engage in such activities must face the full might of the law."

The minister has also urged the public to get involved in the fight against illegal drag racing and to report it immediately and praised initiatives such as those by LeadSA and other formations against illegal drag racing.
