Reports that the Road Freight Association (RFA) planned to blockade roads in protest against the Gauteng e-tolling system were unfounded, it said on Friday.

The RFA was unable to determine the origin of rumours circulating on various electronic media that it had planned a mass shutdown of the toll roads, spokesman Gavin Kelly said.

RFA members had not been involved in such blockades and did not intend to do this.

“Should such an action be envisaged, the association would timeously inform the general public and related affected role players,” Kelly said.

The association was, however, concerned about the implementation of the electronic tolling system, including issues around registration, collection and dispute processes.

The e-toll system was expected to start on April 30, when motorists would be charged for using major highways around Johannesburg and Tshwane. Billing would be determined through an automated number-plate reading system.

Earlier, the SA National Roads Agency Limited announced it had started a trial of the billing system. Motorists using the toll roads might receive test invoices, whether or not they were registered, but these did not need to be paid. - Sapa
