Motorists driving along Jan Smuts Avenue in Parktown, Johannesburg, need to keep a mirror handy if they have any hope of reading the street name.

It appears the Johannesburg Roads Agency got it wrong - again - painting the letters backwards.

It was reported last week that Rivonia residents had to do some guesswork about which street they were living in because the JRA painters omitted the number of the avenues along Rivonia Road, painting only “th Ave”.

LOSING THEIR DIRECTION

Now an amused Professor Ken Boffard has photographed a newly painted sign on Jan Smuts Avenue, close to Valley Road.

“It seems the painters have also lost their sense of direction here - most of the letters are painted backwards,” he said.

The JRA said last week the contractors in Rivonia, where the shoddy work was done on 7th, 9th, 10th and 12th avenues, were on leave and would complete the job in January 2014. - The Star
