SA's 20 best selling vehicles of 2012

Back in the 'nineties, a British motoring mag famously remarked that 20-million buyers can be wrong, when referring to one of the world's best selling cars.

Sure, we can argue for days over whether car A is better than car B, but in the greater scheme of things what really counts is how the buyers actually vote with their wallets.

1: VW Polo Vivo. With 34 873 of these finding homes in 2012, this was the most loved vehicle in the land last year.2: Toyota Hilux. Losing to the Polo Vivo by a narrow margin, 34 396 of these bakkies were sold in 2012.3: VW Polo, 28 667 sold.4: Chevrolet Utility, 19 079 sold.5: Nissan NP200, 17 789 sold.6. Toyota Corolla, 16 452 sold (including Auris hatch).7: Ford Ranger, 15 662 sold.8: Toyota Etios, 14 950 sold. Not bad considering it only went on sale in May.9: Ford Figo, 14 376 sold.10: Isuzu KB, 13 392 sold. Could become even more popular when the all-new one is launched early this year.11: Toyota Quantum, 12 965 sold.12: Toyota Fortuner, 12 965 sold.13: BMW 3 Series, 11 398 sold.14: Toyota Yaris, 8802 sold.15: Nissan NP300, 8708 sold.16: Chevrolet Aveo, 6992 sold.17: VW Golf, 6881 sold.18: Renault Sandero, 6580 sold.19: Chevrolet Sonic, 6475 sold.20: Chevrolet Spark, 6467 sold.

South Africans did a lot of automotive voting last year, with 623 914 vehicles leaving our showroom floors - a good 9.2 percent more than the year before.

But which models got the thumbs up? View our gallery above or the list below to see South Africa's 20 most loved vehicles.

We calculated the year’s total sales figures for each of these by using Naamsa's monthly sales reports, which unfortunately do not include the individual sales figures of non-reporters like Kia, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. The latter will be reporting individual figures from this year though.
