Cape Town - Eight people died on Western Cape roads at the weekend. The number was down from last weekend where at least 12 people were reported dead in separate accidents.
The deaths involved six pedestrians. Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said: “Pedestrians are still a major concern and we notice most of the pedestrian fatalities this weekend were in the metro. Pedestrians must not cross busy freeways and must use safe crossings and pedestrian bridges.”
He said another concern was drunk pedestrians.
The two motorists who were killed were involved in crashes in Parow and Khayelitsha, he said.
Africa said 17 drivers were arrested for drunken driving and 322 were prosecuted. He said the slight decrease in fatalities meant motorists were “better behaved” and noted the number of drunk drivers arrested had decreased.
