Speedsters' weird, hilarious excuses

Heard about the speeding hearse rushing to pick up a body? Or how about the pastor who needed to floor it to get to a baptism? You might not have, but the metro police officers have – and many more excuses that motorists give for speeding.

Like this one. On March 29 in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni metro police officers stopped a hearse that was doing 132km/h.

Inside was a 65-year-old man who said he was rushing to pick up a body from a mortuary.

Even men of the cloth are not immune to bending the rules of the road all in the name of God’s work.

This past Sunday, a pastor, 42, was stopped in Kempton Park after clocking 164km/h. His excuse?: “I’m rushing to baptise someone.”

“Other reasons range from a runny tummy to visiting a parent in hospital. Others would just claim that they were daydreaming,” said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman Wilfred Kgasago.

Joburg metro police spokeswoman Edna Mamonyane said most of the city’s speedsters they catch are men aged between 20 and 30.

The one excuse that takes the cake has to be from a young man in his twenties who told the officers that he was rushing home because his mother had just died.

Worried about the man’s apparent emotional state, the officers decided to escort the young man home.

“When they got to his Lenasia home, they offered their condolences. They also asked to speak to an elder who they could give the key to and drive the young man around as they were scared that he was a danger to himself and others,” said Mamonyane.

But the father was confused, and wanted to know who the condolences were for.

The man was then arrested . -The Star
