As far as we're concerned the latest Ford Focus RS is so good to drive that it doesn't really matter that it's not as powerful as its key rival, the Mercedes-AMG A45. Yet those that can't take the sneering from the AMG camp will be pleased to know that there is possibly a factory-backed solution on the horizon, although it's only available in Europe for now.

The engine upgrade was co-developed by Ford and performance specialist Mountune and is fully covered by the factory warranty.

How many more ponies?

The software and component upgrade increases maximum power from 257kW to 276kW, while the amount of torque available on overboost (in 12 second spurts) increases by 40Nm to 510Nm. As a result the Mountune Focus RS is able to sprint to 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds, according to factory claims, 0.2 seconds quicker than the stock version. Compared to its rivals, the upgraded RS is 6kW more powerful than the Audi RS3 and is just 4kW shy of Merc's A45.

What have they done to it?

In addition to a software upgrade, the performance kit includes a modified air re-circulation valve, unique alloy crossover duct with silicone hoses and a 'high-performance' air filter.

“Ford has a proud history of working with Mountune to unleash even more power from our hot hatchbacks for dedicated performance enthusiasts,” Ford Performance vehicle engineering manager Tyrone Johnson enthused. “Boosting power to 375 PS (276kW) launches the already class-leading Focus RS even further ahead of the field.”

The kit will be available in select European markets and is eventually destined for the US too. We're currently awaiting confirmation on whether the kit will be offered to South African buyers.
