Geneva stars: six brutal new hypercars

Geneva Motor Show - On the face of it, the days of manic machines offering near-supersonic driving thrills seem to be numbered, given the ever-stricter environmental laws and technological advancements that want the car to drive you.

Thankfully, for the high-octane-blooded at least, many carmakers simply haven't received that memo yet and as a result, this week's Geneva Motor Show was bursting with hypercars intent on pushing the very limits of physics in the pursuit of breaking all the power and speed records.

These are six of the beastliest.

Bugatti Chiron

One of the most eagerly anticipated cars of this decade, Bugatti has reinvented the quintessential hypercar, with some notable improvements over the Veyron that it replaces.

With 1103kW and 1600Nm on tap, Bugatti's reworked 8-litre, quad-turbo W16 engine can allegedly get the Chiron from 0-100km/h in under 2.5 seconds, while top speed has been limited to 420km/h.

Arash AF10

While Bugatti claims its new beast is the most powerful production car ever, much will hinge on the definition of production as the Arash AF10 claims to have 1551kW and 2280Nm on command. Granted, the English hypercar maker is only going to build a handful of them a year (vs Bugatti's total production run of 500) but let's not dwell on that.

To achieve such mammoth outputs a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 pairs up with an electric motor in each wheel to create the ultimate hyper-hybrid drivetrain. It's a bit slower accelerating than the Bugatti, however, with Arash claiming a 2.8s 0-100, which goes to show just how hard it can be to get a car off the mark even if you do have all the power in the world. The other catch is that the 880kW worth of electrical boost only lasts for just over two minutes before needing a recharge from the drivetrain.

Koenigsegg Regera

The Regera is now showroom ready and it blasts onto the scene with a hybrid system that mates a 5-litre turbo V8 to three electric motors to produce over 1100kW and 2000Nm.

0-100km/h happens in 2.8 seconds, while 200 comes up in just 6.6s and you'll even make it to the 400 mark in around 20s.

Apollo Arrow

While not quite as manic as the above three, the Apollo Arrow is certainly worthy of a place on your hypercar wish list. While maximum power from its 4-litre twin-turbo V8 amounts to 'just' 735kW, the Arrow is rather light at just 1300kg and as a result it'll still dart to 100 in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 360km/h.

Lamborghini Centenario

The Lamborghini Centenario celebrates what would have been company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini's 100th birthday, in explosive style.

The Italian supercar maker will build just 40 of these - 20 coupes and 20 roadsters - at a starting price of 1.7 million euro (R29m) excluding tax.

For that you'll get from 0-100 in 2.8 seconds and to 300 in just 23.5s with the might of Lambo's normally aspirated 566kW V12. A full carbon fibre monocoque and body keeps weight down to just 1520kg, while rear-wheel steering boosts agility.

Techrules AT96 Trev

Though this feature was meant to be about production cars, we’ll bend the rules a bit for this amazing concept car from China as its maker is hoping to put a showroom version on the market within the next few years.

What makes it so awesome? Like the Jaguar C-X75 concept of 2010, it's turbine powered. The micro-turbine can do up to 96 000 revolutions per minute and serves as a range-extender for the electric motors.

It doesn't fall far behind on the hypercar scale either, with a claimed output of 758kW and 2.5-second 0-100km/h sprint.

Hey you in the Bugatti, wanna dice?
