Birmingham, west Midlands - Stunt driver Alastair Moffatt has reclaimed his world record for the tightest parallel park at the annual International Racing Car Show.

Until recently Moffat held the record with a gap of 86mm, until Chinese stunt driver Han Yue took it down to 80mm in November last year.

Moffat, a master instructor at Stunt Drive UK, slid a Fiat 500C 1.2 neatly between a 500S TwinAir and 500C TwinAir, which were parked with just 75mm to spare. Yes, Cyril, that means the distance between the two parked cars was less than a hand's width more than the overall length of Moffat's Fiat.

NO MODIFICATIONS

What's more, the car was bog standard, with no modifications to engine, gearbox, chassis or brakes, other than having its electronic stability programme disconnected to enable Moffat to steer it with the handbrake, and higher than standard tyre pressures to compensate for the abrasive surface of the NEC arena.

Moffat also added a steering knob to speed up the steering for this extreme driving manoeuvre.

Fiat UK's Kate McLaren, watching nervously, commented: "Obviously, we don't recommend that people attempt such amazing manoeuvres in public, but it's good to know just how manoeuvrable a Fiat 500 is in the hands of a trained professional."
