Anti-gay nations may lose foreign aid

British Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to slash aid from African countries with poor records on gay rights.

The Prime Minister will tell struggling nations they will receive funding “fines” if persecution of homosexuals continues.

The government has already cut aid to Malawi by £19 million after two gay men were sentenced to 14 years hard labour. The southern African nation also plans to bring in tough anti-lesbian laws.

International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell could also reduce aid to Uganda and Ghana unless they drop laws against homosexuality.

Uganda, which is due to receive £70 million in 2011, plans to punish homosexuality with the death penalty.

The president of Ghana, which gets £36 million a year, has promised to bring in measures to “check the menace of homosexuality and lesbianism”.

Just days ago, Cameron told the Conservative Party conference that it was right to legalise gay marriage.

Elton John and Madonna both joined the international outcry when the two gay men were imprisoned in Malawi for getting engaged. They were later freed, but the anti-lesbian laws are still likely to go ahead.

Malawi has received £200 million from Britain over the past three years. However, no mention has been made of cutting aid to Zimbabwe, which got £69 million last year. Gay people there still face persecution from security forces.

Three weeks ago, Mitchell protested to Uganda’s President Museveni, who had claimed “European homosexuals are recruiting in Africa”.

A spokesman for Mitchell said: “The government is committed to combating violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in all circumstances, in this country and abroad. We take action where we have concerns.

“We only provide aid directly to governments when satisfied that they share our commitments to reduce poverty and respect human rights.”

It is not the first time the UK has withdrawn funding from Malawi. Labour reduced aid by £3 million after President Mutharika spent £8 million on a presidential jet. - Daily Mail

Until you people learn to be civilised you do not warrant 1 penny of UK aid.

@badballie. Your comments are always ignorant and poorly thought out. How is it corrupt to require of a beggar that he buys food with the money, rather than using it to pay soldiers to beat up gays or buy jets? Why is it any problem of the west's that africans are dying of hunger? Colonialism blah blah etc etc., rubbish. Why is South Africa viable, despite its harsh colonial past? The reason is that most african states are happy to park off on their arses and stick their hands out to the west, asking for donations for jets and militia to beat up gays.

hi anonymous below at 11am. The western countries can dictate terms because it's their money that they're giving. Simple as that. If you don't like the terms, and want a gay-bashing dirtbag country, then go live in one, but don't go with a begging bowl to the west. Imagine if you were stopped by a beggar at the traffic lights and he asked you for money for glue to sniff. What would you tell him? Would you also say, oh, that's OK, you have the right to do whatever you want to your own body, here, have some money? Or would you tell him to F-off?

The corruption of western powers again rears its ugly head although in this instance they are the toothless words of a fading colonial world power. Lets see cameron explain to the rest of the world why peoplke are dying of hunger because he won't release money for food because of a gay issue. The white upper class makes me sick.

That's crazzzzy! western countries think they can do anything they want. If They are free to allow lesbian and gay mariage, shouldn't other nations also be free not to allow that? How do they understand freedom if they have to impose their views and opinion mostly to african countries? I Just saying that any country its laws when they think that its morally convenient. Just look at the moral of european youth and even their parents! Isn't it enough to establish african presidents for own interest? well, cut off your aid but please come back to God, our socities (western and african) will be better
