Bashir arrest bid: state seeks more time

The state has requested for more time to prepare to respond to arguments for the urgent application for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, asking that it be stood down for Monday morning.

In asking for more time, senior state attorney William Mokhari said: "We are dealing with a very sensitive matter here."

"This is the sitting president of another African country," he said, adding that the judge needed therefore to be presented with well prepared documents and information.

The case being heard in the high court in Pretoria was postponed to Sunday afternoon during an appearance on Sunday morning.

Attorney's for applicants the South African Litigation Centre said they would agree to coming back on Monday on condition they were given assurance that migration officials at all points of entry were ordered not to allow al-Bashir out of the country pending finalisation of the case.

Both parties are expected back in court shortly, with a,draft of the conditions of postponement.
