Kigali - The Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday expelled a senior United Nations human rights official, Information Minister Lambert Mende said.

Scott Campbell, director of the UN Human Rights Office in DRC, had not “worked well” with the government, Mende told dpa.

The expulsion came two days after a UN report implicated DRC police in the killing of nine people and the disappearance of 32 others during a crackdown on gangs in Kinshasa this year and in 2013.

Ida Sawyer, a senior researcher with Human Rights Watch based in DRC, told dpa the government should investigate the killings and disappearances.

“The government should not be interfering with human rights investigators, but let them do their work unimpeded,” she said.
