Antananarivo - Four prisoners died and 16 were caught during a mass jailbreak attempt at the southern tip of Madagascar, media reported on Saturday.

The 21 prisoners fled a jail on Thursday afternoon in Tolagnaro, formerly known as Fort Dauphin.

Three prisoners were gunned down by security officials in a hail of bullets, while the fourth was lynched by a local militia, according to newspaper L'Express.

It took until Friday afternoon to locate all the escaped prisoners, with prison officials working with police and local militias to track them down.

The captured men were returned to prison, with some given additional sentences. Prison officials have instituted stricter security measures. - Sapa-dpa
