Kigali - Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila on Thursday directed security officials to destroy a marijuana plantation grown by his own guards.
Presidential guards were illegally growing marijuana near the airport of the city of Goma, in the eastern Kivu region, said residents who tipped-off the presidency anonymously.
Goma Mayor Nason Kabuya Ndowole confirmed the seizure.
He said the region was struggling with a growing marijuana
trade. The authorities did not say whether the guards would face criminal charges. Marijuana plantations are usually hidden in the thick forests of the eastern DRC and are from where the drug is smuggled into neighbouring countries.
