Durban - The government has set up a team to tackle cross-border crime syndicates because of the frequency of car hijackings where vehicles end up in Mozambique.

In a statement issued by the provincial Premier Senzo Mchunu’s office at the weekend, his acting spokesman, Sibusiso Magwaza, said the situation had deteriorated to such an extent that thieves merely knocked on a parked car’s door and demanded the keys. The most common vehicles targeted were vans and 4x4s, Magwaza said.

“It was after receiving these complaints from ordinary people that the premier initiated this meeting in consultation with his cabinet colleagues in Community Safety and Liaison, and Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs,” said Magwaza.

The team, which met with a view to find ways to stop the crime, included police, the community and traditional leaders in Makhasa in the uMkhanyakude (Mkuze) district.

uMkhanyakude borders Mozambique and Swaziland.

Follow-up meetings are expected soon, Magwaza said.
