Johannesburg - Zambian President Edgar Lungu was discharged from a Pretoria hospital after an operation on Friday, and his specialist doctors had certified him “fit to resume full duties”, his spokesman said on Saturday.

Lungu, 58, had an operation to correct a narrowing of his oesophagus – the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach – which had caused him to fall ill last Sunday in Zambia.

Spokesman Amos Chanda said in a statement on Saturday that Lungu’s staff were working on arrangements for his return to Lusaka.

Chanda said on Friday that Lungu had undergone a medical procedure in theatre that day, and that specialists had managed the condition accordingly.

He said doctors had pronounced the results of the procedure to be to their satisfaction, and that the president was accordingly discharged.

“The president has been asked to return for a medical review in a few weeks’ time.

“The Zambian and South African doctors attending to the president are all satisfied with the outcome of the comprehensive medical attention.”

Chanda also released photographs of Lungu leaving hospital on Saturday.
