Rabat - A four-member group suspected of having ties to the Islamic State have been arrested in Morocco, officials said Monday.

They planned to carry out attacks against “strategic” sites to destabilise Morocco, the Interior Ministry said without elaborating.

The four were detained in the city of Beni Mellal, 250 kilometres south of the North African country’s capital Rabat.

They had “contacts and coordination” with Islamic State, which is active in Syria and Iraq, according to the ministry.

Authorities said on Saturday they had detained a Moroccan man affiliated to the extremist group on suspicions of planning attacks in the country and Europe.

Morocco is seen as a main supplier of recruits for Islamic State.

In July, Interior Minister Mohammed Hassad said that 1 350 Moroccans had joined the al-Qaeda splinter group.
