A murder suspect was beaten to death by a mob in a jail in eastern Madagascar, the authorities said Saturday.

The man was held at the local police station for allegedly killing a clove dealer. Madagascar is one of the main producers of cloves in the world.

Tensions increased as angry residents stoned the police station, and police had to call in reinforcements from neighbouring areas.

The mob finally stormed the police station and lynched the murder suspect.

There have been increasing cases of citizens taking the law into their own hands in Madagascar, because of the protracted legal system and corruption. - Sapa-dpa
