Ramaphosa visits Uganda

Johannesburg - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Uganda on Thursday, his office said.

Spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said Ramaphosa would meet Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni on Friday to discuss the South Sudanese peace process.

In accordance with the objective of bringing about peace and stability in South Sudan, Ramaphosa visited Addis Ababa on Wednesday and Thursday where he held talks with major stakeholders to the peace process Äincluding African Union Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Ethiopian prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn and South Sudanese vice president Riek Machar.

“The visit to Addis Ababa was preceded by another to South Sudan on Wednesday which saw deputy president Ramaphosa meeting with South Sudanese president Salva Kirr in the capital city, Juba.”

Ramaphosa was expected to proceed to Dar es Salaam on Friday, for a further consultation with Tanzanian president Jikaya Kikwete before returning to South Africa.

Mamoepa said Ramaphosa has been consulting respective leaders in the various countries in the region in his capacity as Special Envoy to South Sudan.

“In this regard, South Africa has committed itself to working with all stakeholders in the region, including the African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development 1/8Igad 3/8 as well as all political role-players to help find a lasting political solution to current challenges facing South Sudan,” he said.
