Cape Town – Police in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain in Cape Town have arrested a 31-year-old man after he was found in possession of a large amount of Mandrax tablets and illegal firearm ammunition, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

Lentegeur South African Police Service (SAPS) crime prevention unit officers were on patrol at about 6.10pm on Friday in the Lentegeur area when they noticed a white Mazda vehicle, Captain FC van Wyk said.

The driver, who was known to the police, then sped off. The officers gave chase to Malva Street, Lentegeur, where the man tried to flee. However, the officers caught up with him and upon searching the vehicle they found 3500 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value R150,000 and 18 x 45mm rounds.

“The 31-year-old suspect was arrested and will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs and illegal possession of ammunition,” Van Wyk said.
