Johannesburg - A total of 42 trucks and small delivery vehicles have been attacked on the East Rand alone since the beginning of the truck drivers' strike, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Monday.
So far, 45 people had been arrested in connection with violence and damage to property, said spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng.
Striking truck drivers aligned to the SA Transport Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) embarked on the strike on September 24.
On Monday morning alone, six trucks were attacked on the East Rand.
A small delivery truck and a heavy truck were torched in Kempton Park on Monday morning.
In Boksburg, a bakery truck was pelted with stones. The driver and two of his passengers were robbed of their cellphones and 60
loaves of bread. The attackers apparently threw a petrol bomb at the vehicle.
In Elandsfontein a truck was attacked and another truck was torched.
In Germiston, two bakery trucks were set alight.
No arrests were made in connection with Monday's attacks.
Mokheseng said metro police were monitoring “hot-spots”, including the N12 freeway, where trucks had been targeted near the Kraft road off-ramp.
Satawu has blamed the violence on thugs who want to give the unions a bad reputation. - Sapa
