Port Elizabeth - Butterworth police in the Eastern Cape have arrested a 48-year-old man for the alleged rape of an elderly woman. Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said that it was alleged the 76-year-old grandmother was sleeping alone at her home at Msendo Village in Willovale when she felt the suspect strangling her.

The incident allegedly occurred on Youth Day last week, during the evening.

Manatha said the suspect was identified as the woman's neighbour and police arrested him on Monday.

He is expected to appear in the Willovale magistrate's court on Wednesday on a charge of rape.
