Johannesburg - Crimeline head Yusuf Abramjee was almost hijacked in Joburg on Friday.

Ironically, Abramjee was in Joburg ahead of Lead SA’s Change Makers Conference, which is being held at the University of Johannesburg today.

Speaking to the Pretoria News, the audibly shaken Abramjee said he was in Kingsway Road when an armed assailant stepped out of a Toyota Tazz and approached his vehicle.

“I sped off when I saw him and he stopped his pursuit.

“He then snatched a handbag from a woman who was standing on the island, got in the car and they drove off,” he said.

At this, Abramjee said he could not stand by and do nothing.

“I followed the vehicle and a high-speed chase ensued through Milpark, Braamfontein and at one point one of the guys in that car fired a shot at me, to which I shot one back,” he said.

However, he lost track of the assailants when they got to Hillbrow.

“I am grateful that I came out of that incident okay.

“It shows that crime in this country is a concern and that more needs to be done to alleviate the problem,” Abramjee said. “Nothing will stop me from fighting crime,” he later tweeted.

This wasn’t the first time Abramjee had been a victim of crime.

In 2013 he was involved in a shoot-out at his Erasmia home when a pair of robbers entered his home and demanded he hand over the keys to his BMW.

The robbers escaped, but were later arrested. That case is currently being heard in the Pretoria Regional Court.
