Alleged cellphone thief nabbed for attempted murder

Johannesburg - A 21-year-old man was arrested , in the Johannesburg CBD for attempted murder, police said on Tuesday.

 

Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele, stationed at Johannesburg Central, said on New Year's Eve the suspect allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old male with pavement bricks at the corner of Anderson and Alexander Streets. 

"The suspect confronted the victim who was walking passing underneath a bridge, he started assaulting him with bricks until he was unconscious and robbed him his cell phone," said Mbele. 

Community members made a citizen's arrest and called the police. The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital. 

The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
