King William’s Town – An alleged robber killed himself and three others were arrested following a robbery in Dutywa, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Police have arrested three suspects aged 21, 26, and 28 for business robbery and a fourth suspect aged 27 shot himself dead when they were cornered by police, spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Dutywa police were alerted about the robbery in progress at a shop owned by a Bangladesh national at Vonqo location in Bholothwa village, Dutywa, at about 2pm on Saturday, he said.

“Police responded and cornered the suspects. The 27-year-old suspect pulled [out] his firearm (9mm pistol) and shot himself dead. He was out on bail on robbery cases. The other suspects were arrested. The firearm had four rounds of ammunition. The deceased was identified but his identity will [be] withheld until his next-of-kin have been informed of his death.”

The arrested suspects would appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of business robbery, Manatha said.
